Achilles “Kelly” Caris of Saginaw, Michigan
Beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Saturday, September 12, 2020. He was 91 years old. Achilles was born on March 29, 1929, in a small village in Greece called Perivlepton. He grew up in the city of Lamia. Achilles served 2 years in the Greek Army. His method of service was that of Radio Technician. After the Army, he chose to pursue electronics as a career. He attended a trade school, Palmer Technical School, in Athens, Greece. In 1956, Achilles immigrated to the United States. He worked at the Family’s Restaurant, “Caris’ Red Lion”, while working toward naturalization. At the age of 36, Achilles went back to Greece, where he was introduced to Georgia Gika, who soon after became Georgia Caris on July 11, 1965. Achilles worked as a T.V. Repairman and Service manager at Godwin’s for 33 years. He was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Achilles enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed travelling with his wife to different states along with frequent visits to Greece.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Georgia A. Caris; three children: James Caris, Chris Caris, and Elaine (Doug) Dallas; six grandchildren: Jacob Caris, Kadon Caris, Briseis Caris, Andrew Dallas, Alexander Dallas, and Ariston Dallas; sister, Demetra Bilali. Also surviving are many additional family members in Greece and the United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Demetrios and Maria Karanasios; brothers, Evangelos and Georgios Karanasios.
A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 4970 Mackinaw Road, Saginaw, Michigan. Fr. Timothy Cook will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to visit at the W. L. Case & Company, 4480 Mackinaw Road, on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A Trisagion Service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Pursuant to the current state executive order, indoor building capacity is limited, face covers are required, and social distancing encouraged. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
