Alexandra Economou

Economou, Mrs. Alexandra Saginaw, Michigan Passed away early Saturday, March 23, 2013, at HealthSource, Saginaw. Age 96 years. Alexandra Vasiliou was born February 11, 1917, in Silipiana, Karditsis, Greece, the daughter of the late Loukia (Papantoniou) and Demetrios Vasiliou. She married Fr. Gregory Economou on January 1, 1929. In 1948, she came to the United States with their children to join Fr. Economou. They lived in Lawrence, Massachusetts before coming to Saginaw in 1951, where Fr. Economou was assigned to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Fr. and Mrs. Economou loved their church, and together they lived their faith by feeding the poor, nursing the sick, and comforting the lonely, often in their own home. It was common to have 30 people at the family table. Mrs. Economou worked at Ferris Brothers Furs until its closing, and then worked from her home as a seamstress. Her customers never left without eating some of her excellent cooking. Her husband, Fr. Gregory Economou, predeceased her 13 years ago on March 23, 2000. Surviving are four children, Electra Innes, California; Euripides (Dee), Arizona; Lou (Soula), Saginaw; Demetrios (Trisha), Florida; ten grandchildren, John (Caree), Dena (JR), Alexis (Dave), Gregory (Betsy), Mark (Sonia), Loukia, Alexia (Evan), Alexandra, Stephanie (fianc Mike), and Gregory; 10 great-grandchildren, Luke, Lindsay, Arianna, Victor, Rip, Luke, AJ, Gregory, Georgia, and Constantine; five sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and their families. Her brother, Constantine Vasiliou, predeceased her at the age of 10 years. Her family extends special thanks to all the staff at HealthSource, Saginaw, for their love and compassionate care. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 4970 Mackinaw Road, Saginaw. Rev. Fr. Irenaeus Cox will officiate with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at the W. L. Case & Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, from 2:00 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, where a Trisagion Service will take place at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.
