Alice Frances Browning of Saginaw, Michigan,
Beloved aunt, sister-in-law, and friend passed away peacefully, comforted by words of Scripture, on Sunday, April 16, 2023. She was 97 years old. Alice Frances Lane was born on February 3, 1926, in Florence, South Carolina, to the late Jap Emory and Mattie (Ammons) Lane. She met the love of her life, Fred Emmerson Browning, while attending a military gathering. The conversation began with Fred saying he was going to marry Alice. She responded, "Do you live on a farm?" Alice didn't want to live on a farm. He said, "No, I live in Michigan!" The rest is history. They dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on June 21, 1945, in Portsmouth, Virginia. He preceded her in death March 28, 2008. Their union brought a son, Fred Emerson Browning II, born August 28, 1954, who passed away suddenly on October 26, 1972. The role of her lifetime was to be a loving and dedicated wife and mother. Alice worked as a laborer at Graber Roller Shade and with General Motors for 11 years, as well as Westdale School where she assisted in the kitchen. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and later identified as a Baptist. Proud of her Southern heritage, Alice enjoyed dressing fashionably, treated everyone with love, kindness, and compassion, and could befriend and talk to anyone with her natural charm. She enjoyed spending time sewing and crocheting and created many beautiful afghans throughout her life. Her little piece of heaven was to cook and bake, especially her famous "mac and cheese" and "brownies". To Alice, "love" was the secret ingredient needed to make all food taste good. She will forever be remembered for her love of all children, her selflessness to anyone in need, for her strong faith, and her ability to stay active and walking everywhere. She truly lived an amazing life filled with many beautiful memories and stories.
Surviving are many treasured and cherished nieces, nephews, a brother- and sister-in-law, and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her four sisters and two brothers: Aubrey Lane, Violet Bryant, Mildred King, Alton Lane, Mary Lou Meacham, and Jap Emory Lane.
