Alice Day

Ask most anyone to describe Laura Alice Day, known as Alice, and the answer would likely include phrases like "always on the go" and "quick with something to say." Those descriptions would have rung true until the last few years when the effects of dementia and advancing years caught up to her. Alice was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 9, 1919. She was the oldest of 5 children born to Dr. Edwin C. Hoff and Helen Parlette Hoff. Because her aunt Laura lived in the same house, she became known as Alice and used that name her entire life. With the exception of her sister, Marjorie Kill, her siblings have all predeceased her. After attending high school in Detroit, where she was a competitive diver, Alice graduated from the University of Michigan in the summer of 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Following graduation Mom became part of the war effort in at least two ways of which her children are aware. One was (she always maintained) as a surveyor for the Army Corps of Engineers in Arizona. It is reported that as part of that posting she made at least one late night parachute jump in the company of far better trained comrades. Alice, as those who knew her well can attest, never was one to be shy about taking on a challenge. Her other contribution to the war effort was providing moral support to a young army infantry lieutenant from Saginaw. His name was Robert R. Day. They were married for over 50 years until he predeceased her in February, 2000. Robert R. Day practiced law in Saginaw from 1947 until his death. During that time Alice served as the cheerleader for her 3 sons: Robert (JoAnn Blackford) of Grosse Pointe Farms, Charles (Debby Hanson, fiance) of Sioux Falls, SD and Douglas of Santiago, Chile. Even while being a devoted wife and mother Alice found time to be an active community volunteer and golfer. She played golf until her early 90's and scored a hole-in-one (long overdue, she maintained) at an age when most everyone else had hung up their clubs. She was also particularly passionate in her support of the activities of the Saginaw Chapter of the Woman's National Farm & Garden Association. Alice made and kept many friends from that organization. She used its activities as an outlet for her creative energies and to bring a love of nature to many folks who could not get out. In addition to numerous nieces and nephews, Alice is survived by three grandchildren (Mackenzie Day of Chicago, Noelle Perkins (Brian) of Western Springs, Ill. and Brody (Elizabeth) of Westlake, OH.) and two great grandchildren (Quinn and Eloise). As fate would have it, an additional grandchild is expected to enter the world on what would have been Alice's 97th birthday. Funeral services will be held in Saginaw at noon on June 24 at the W. L. Case Funeral Home on Mackinaw Road. Visitation will begin at 10 AM. Private entombment will follow at Oakwood Mausoleum.
