Anita Delma Griffiths Grieve “Del” was born May 22, 1928, in Liverpool, England, the first child of John “Jack” and Alice “Mum” (Griffiths) Grieve. Del endured the harsh reality of WWII through her young years. WWII would also bring to her the love of her life, an American soldier, a "Yank", named Amberson (Amby) Driscoll. After coming to America aboard the Queen Mary, Amby and Del were married on February 14, 1948. From this union six children would be born, Linda, Maureen, Dennis, Daniel, Jeffrey, and Jayne. Amby, Linda, and Danny have already made their journey home to be with our Lord. Del went to join them December 18, 2020, surrounded by her family. Del has always had a love of animals and children. From her childhood days in England, where she raised chickens, mothered cats, dogs, and even a monkey, to her life in America where she would become a master dog groomer and breeder. Del was known as the neighborhood vet for so many years. The kindness and love that Del showed to all living things is immeasurable. From the greeters at the store to the staff of her doctor and dentist office, Del was a favorite. Hugs were always given and people would flock to receive them. The loss of this beautiful soul will forever be missed, not just by her heartbroken family, but by so many who she touched in her special ways.
Del was so very proud of her large family. She would remind us frequently, "If it wasn't for me, none of you would be here!" (Of course, spoken with her beautiful English accent.) Del is survived by her children, Maureen (Jim) Howell, Dennis (Beth Anderson) Driscoll, Jeffrey (Hannah) Driscoll, and Jayne (Tony) Jessop. Linda (Thomas) Nichols and infant son, Danny, preceded her in death. In keeping with Del's love of animals, she is also survived by her best friend for the past 10 years, her pup, Peggy. Known as Mommy Del or Gramma Del to her 13 grandchildren, they have always been a great source of joy for her. Jeff (Carol) Nichols, Rebecca Wolf, Heather (Justin) Boyes, Colleen (David) Curry, John (Emma) Driscoll, James Driscoll, William (Lindsey) Driscoll, Rae Anne (Steve) Besser, Sam Howell, Tyler Driscoll, Jeffrey (Mollie) Driscoll, Jordan Driscoll, and Katie Jessop. Del's great-grandchildren total 18, Alisha Nichols; Eve, Eli, Atticus, and Henry Wolf; Robby, Anna, Maddy, and Izzy Boyes; Alaina and Alexander Curry; Wren and Gordon Driscoll; Hugo Driscoll; Wesley and Harrison Besser; Jack and Sylvie Driscoll. Del is also survived by her sister Beryl Szabo. Her sister Marlene Sawyer-Cline predeceased her. Del is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins, but will also be welcomed home to Heaven by several who have gone before her.
Anyone wishing to express their sympathy for Del, please consider a donation in her name to the Amazing Grace Animal Rescue of Freeland, the Humane Society of Saginaw, or an animal shelter in your area. A graveside service will be held for immediate family.
