Kern, Sr., Arthur W. Saginaw, MI Beloved father of Arthur W. Kern Jr. and Susan (Van Tiflin) Kern of Holland, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Clare Bridge of Saginaw at the age 85 years. Arthur was born on June 8, 1928 in Lansing, Michigan to the late William and Wanda (Zelmer) Kern. He married Elizabeth Grace Graham on July 31, 1971; she predeceased him on October 19, 1994. He was also predeceased by a brother, Herbert C. Kern. Arthur attended Ascenion Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of Lansing Eastern High School and attended Michigan State University. Arthur had been employed by Morely Brothers and associated with the Teamsters Local 486 for 31 years, retiring in 1983. He was a retired Naval Chief Petty Officer and a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Arthur was an active member of the American Legion Post 439 of Saginaw, participating in the Rifle Squad and holding various positions over the years. He was also a life-long member of the V.F.W. Arthur was also a hospice volunteer and enjoyed helping others. He enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing, gardening, and feeding and watching the birds in his yard and God's many wonders of nature. Surviving besides his son and daughter-in-law, Arthur W. Kern, Jr. and Susan (Van Tiflin) Kern and many other dear relatives and friends, including a special friend Helen Keane. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2013 at W. L. Case and Company, 201 N. Miller Rd. Pastor Julie Bailey will officiate with military burial at Roselawn Memorial Gardens under the auspices of American Legion 439. Friends may call at the funeral chapel on Friday from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. and on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service.
