Asencion "Junior" Guzman of Saginaw, Michigan
Beloved husband, father, papa, brother, uncle, friend, and compadre passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Asencion "Jr" Guzman was born on February 12, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan, to the late Asencion and Martha (Gomez) Guzman. He was a proud 1968 graduate of Arthur Hill High School. Following graduation, Jr. honorably served his country as a sergeant in the United States Army stationed in Korea. He married the love of his life, Marta Zamora on June 10, 1972, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Saginaw; she survives him. Jr. was employed by Saginaw Steering Gear Plant 2 working as both an assembly lineman and the first Hispanic union representative. He retired after 34 years of service. Jr. was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he actively participated in various groups and ministries. He was a member of the UAW 699, Past President of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, and a member of American Legion Post #439. Jr. was the co-host, along with is daughter, of Q 90.1 El Sol Latino on Delta College. He served as president and secretary of his golf league for over 30 years and was chair of the golf committee at St. Joseph. Jr. was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, baseball, softball, and basketball and was humbled to share this passion for sports with his children and grandchildren. Jr. also enjoyed the competition and camaraderie sports brought to his brothers and friends, especially the celebratory ring of fire after Thursday night golf. Above all, he loved and cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren; they were the light, love, and beauty in his life. He will forever be remembered for his wisdom, generosity, and kind and hardworking spirit and for his mantras "take care of each other", "study hard", "thumbs up always", and lastly "no regrets!"
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Marta Guzman of Saginaw; daughter, Amy (Matt Salogar) Guzman of Saginaw; son, Andrew (Adrianne) Guzman of Livonia; four grandchildren: Maggie, J.P., and Gabi Salogar, and Noah Guzman; four brothers: Henry (Alice) Guzman; Bernardo (Yolanda) Guzman; Eduardo Guzman all of Saginaw; Jose (La Shawn) Guzman of Toledo, OH; Also surviving are many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Sam Zamora and Lola Teneyque, Berto and Connie Rodriguez, Enrique Sanchez, Julian and Esther Garcia, Barb and Dave Salogar, Nancy and Ken Thelen, and Rosa Fulgencio for the love and care they provided to Jr. in his final days. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Helen Guzman.
The Guzman family would like to humbly acknowledge the extraordinary healthcare and respect they received from Dr. Michael Mott M.D., Dr. Suneesh Anand M.D., and his nurse, Amy.
A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 910 N. Sixth Ave. Rev. Fr. Francis Voris, OFM Cap will officiate. Military Honors and Rite of Committal will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the auspices of the United States Army and the American GI Forum. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Vigil Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening. Jr. will lie in state at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
