Benjamin “Ben” Herbert Smith of Burt
Age 93
Passed away on Sunday, March 20th, 2022, at home. He was born on January 19th, 1929, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Benjamin & Mary Jane (LaForge) Smith. Ben proudly served in the United States Army from 1949-1950 & from 1953-1954. After meeting through his sister, Ben married the love of his life, Helen Joyce Thompson on May 12th, 1951, and the two shared nearly 50 years together. She preceded him in death on January 7th, 2001. A hard worker, Ben spent his career as a skilled welder for General Motors. When not at home, Ben was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt various wildlife such as deer, duck, goose, pheasant, and more. He was described as being a kind and selfless man who would give you the shirt off his back, and a good storyteller with a sharp mind. Above all, Ben was a family man who cherished spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, who will miss him greatly.
Ben is survived by children Cindy Winstanley, Dawn (Mark) Schmidt, & Ben (Marie) Smith; grandchildren Shannon (Randy) Stovall, Tara (Andy) Schmidt, Michelle (Dave) Andre, Mark (Abby) Schmidt II, Dane Schmidt, Sierra (Mike) Mohre, Ashley (Mikie) Smith, Curt Smith, Dylan Smith; great grandchildren Zoey (Tanner) Stovall, Benton (Darby) Hamann, Levi Stovall, Emiliegh Crockett, Kolbey Mohre, Dominic Vo, Eva Vo, Mallory Mumaw, Aaron Mumaw, Logan Andre, & Carson Andre; many nieces, nephews, and other family members; special friends Wayne Compton & Terry Fouchea; and his beloved dog Bud.
Ben was preceded in death by siblings Meeta Klemish, John Smith, and Harry Smith, and half siblings Minnie Smith & Henry Smith.
A funeral service honoring Ben’s life will take place on March 23rd, 2022, at 12:00pm at W.L. Case & Co. Funeral Home, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. Saginaw, Michigan, with interment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will precede the service from 10:00am until the time of the service. Those wishing a show of sympathy may choose to make a contribution to the Veteran’s Administration or to the Humane Society of Saginaw County.
