Loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the age of 96 years. The son of the late Joseph and Anna (Wineicke) Gaertner was born on March 12, 1922 in Saginaw. He married Katherine Papst on April 14, 1945; she predeceased him on September 23, 2011. Clarence served in the U.S. Army Air Force, and was a member of American Legion Post #439. He worked as a dairy farmer on the familys centennial farm. Clarence was an active member of St. Dominic Parish, SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church site. Sonny also served as a James Township Trustee and as a Constable for James Township. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, cheering on the Detroit Tigers, and playing cards. Surviving are his three children: Clarence "Sonny" (Nancy) Gaertner II of Muskegon, MI; Dorothy (Harold) Kretz of Saginaw, MI; Susan Gaertner of Saginaw, MI; 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren: Brenda (Marty) Wilson and their children: Katherine and Nicholas; Brian (Jaime) Kretz and their children: Jocelyn, Julia, and Jeremiah; Eric (Anne) Gaertner and their children: A.J. and Keegan; Douglas (Anne) Gaertner and their children: Abbi and Amelia; Christi (Adam) LaFond and their children: Aiden and Alaina; Jeff (April) Gaertner and their children: Junior and Jonah and many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by 3 brothers and 5 sisters: Lawrence, Edward, Joseph, Helen Reimer, Alfrieda Jarabeck, Theresa Bremer, Clara Watchko, Marion Ederer, his step-brother Clarence Rodeitcher and twin granddaughters Lisa and Lori Gaertner. The family would like to thank the staff at Cartwright Hospice Residence for the loving care they gave Clarence. Funeral liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 3, 2018 at St. Dominic Parish, SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 4735 W. Michigan Ave. Fr. Steve Gavit and Fr. Jack Johnson will officiate with military burial at St. Andrew Cemetery under the auspices of American Legion Post #439. Friends may visit with the family at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Rd. on Thursday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. where a vigil for Clarence will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friends may also visit on Friday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral liturgy.
