Delores Ann "Sis" Penney, Freeland, MI. Much adored wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, godmother, and aunt, Sis relocated to Heaven on Friday, February 26, 2021, from her home in Freeland, surrounded by family. Age 89 years. Delores Ann Stroebel was born in Saginaw on March 3, 1931, to the late Arthur and Geraldine (LaFever) Stroebel. After graduating from Sts. Peter & Paul High School in Saginaw, she was introduced to the dashing and handsome young marine who would become the love of her life, Matthew Penney. Following his military service, they were married on May 12, 1951, and spent the next 64 years loving each other and raising a family. He predeceased her on January 30, 2016. Sis was an accomplished homemaker, a wonderful cook, and a friend to nearly everyone she met. She spent many years hauling their children to and from Little League, sports practices, games, and band concerts. A lifelong Catholic, Sis was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her three children and their spouses, Joyce (Tim) Schroeder of Midland, Matthew M. (Nancy) Penney of Beaverton, and Nancy (Dale) Nickell of Grand Ledge; six grandchildren, Ashleigh (Ryan) Fitzgerald, Rayechel (Nathan) Berger, Caitlyn (Joshua) Curry, Stephanie (Benjimen) Wellman, Jason (Barbara) Juneau, and Jared (Julie) Juneau; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Russell and Diana Fox; one brother, Donald "Bubs" Stroebel; one brother-in-law, James (Peggy) Penney; and numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends.
Sis was predeceased by her parents; her in-laws, Eugene and Lula Penney; one sister and her spouse, Donna (Richard) Donoghue; two brothers-in-law, W. James Russell, and Michael Fox; three sisters-in-law and their spouses, lone (Temple) Wilkin; Irene Velat; Eunice (Tom) La Fever; and one brother-in-law and his spouse, Hugh (Betty) Penney.
A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 300 Johnson Street, Freeland, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Andy LaFramboise will officiate with burial to follow in St. Andrew Cemetery, Saginaw, Michigan. Friends may call at the W.L. Case & Co. Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and then at the Church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider St. Agnes Catholic Church or Covenant Visiting Nurses. The Penney family would like to extend their deepest appreciation for the nursing staffs of Covenant Hospital, especially the Emergency Department and the fifth floor; Covenant Visiting Nurses; and the home care givers from Great Lakes Care Unlimited whose care, kindness, and compassion made our mother's final days easier.
