Donald D. Millard

Millard, Donald B. Saginaw, Michigan Passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Covenant Cooper at the age of 87 years. He was born January 14, 1929 in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, the son of the late Auley (Gallaway) and Herbert Millard. He graduated from Port Huron High School, where he played trumpet in the band. He served with the US Army during the Korean War. He later attended the Chicago Institute of Arts. He had been employed by General Motors Corporation, first at Nodular Iron Foundry and later at Grey Iron Foundry, retiring after 23 years of service. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee and an usher, and also worked with youth. He was an artist, working in painting, photography and woodcarving. He had a large body of work of hand-carved birds of North America, which he showed at various venues. He was engaged in the history and study of shipping and shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. He played hockey and also coached youth hockey. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed gardening and collecting postcards and was an avid traveler. He married Dorothy J. West on October 28, 1950; she survives him. He also leaves their son, Michael and his wife Patti Millard, Merrill, MI; grandson William and his wife Kelli Wenzel and their son, William "Billy" Wenzel; several nieces, nephews and their families; special friends, Helene Wiltse, Brian and Barbara Ludlum, and Jerry and Liz Losee. He was predeceased by a brother, Dudley Millard. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 6, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, 4790 Gratiot. Rev. Kathy Snedeker will officiate with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Rd., from 2:00 6:00 p.m. Sunday and then at church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
