Donald "Don" L. McMahon of St. Charles, Michigan

Beloved brother, uncle, cousin, and friend passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 24, 2022, at his winter residence in Naples, Florida. He was 74 years old. Donald was born on October 11, 1947, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Francis "Frank" Joseph and Josephine (Willis) McMahon. He was a proud graduate of Merrill High School and attended Utah State University where he planned on pursing a career in conservation as a forest ranger. What changed Don's life path was honorably servicing his country in the United State Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. PFC Donald L. McMahon served 1967 t 1973 as a radio operator and expert rifleman during the Vietnam War where he received many awards and commendations, including a Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Rifle Expert Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Certificate of Service for distinguished service in the US Marine Corps. Don enjoyed gardening, reading, and supporting his favorite charities. He loved playing cards, board games, dominos, or just visiting with family and friends. Throughout his life he supported various charities and political organizations. Don had a good heart and was selfless, often supporting organizations that helped people and valued human rights. The Campaign for Tibet, an organization dear to his heart, promoted human rights and democratic freedoms for the people of Tibet. He will forever be remembered for his optimism and gregarious smile, his love for sunshine and warm weather, and for helping anyone in need.

Surviving are five brothers and one sister: Dan (Laura) McMahon, Tim (Helen) McMahon, Bob McMahon, Jerry McMahon, Mary Jo McMahon, and Brian (Frank) McMahon; 20 beloved nieces and nephews; many treasured and cherished cousins, including Karen Furguson and Charlotte Billger; and his friends and companions, Tim and Judy Gulick, Clarence and Brenda Henderson, Bill and Terry Davis, and Terry Roberts; and brother-in-law, Sam Benjamin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis "Frank" and Josephine McMahon; siblings: Tom McMahon, Jack McMahon, Kathleen Benjamin, Bill McMahon, and Dean McMahon.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the W. L. Case & Company, 125 E. Saginaw Street, Merrill. Rev. Fr. Michael F. Steltenkamp S.J. will officiate. Military Honors and burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery under the auspices of the United State Marine Corps and American Legion Post #468 - St. Charles. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the funeral chapel on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
