Donald W. Sanderson Sr. Bridgeport, Michigan Beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Monday, October 14, 2019 at Covenant HealthCare - Harrison with his loving family at his side; at the age of 97 years. The son of the late Harold M. and Martha E. (Orser) Sanderson was born on September 13, 1922 in Owosso, Michigan. Donald married Lucille Obuchowski on November, 28, 1942; she preceded him in death on February 12, 1999. He was a proud graduate of Arthur Hill Trade School with the class of 1940. Donald proudly served with the United States Army in World War II, being engaged in the Battle of the Bulge. After sustaining injuries from a landmine, Donald was honorably discharged and received a Purple Heart Medal for his serivce; amongst several other medals he was decorated with. He was a manger of the Farm Bureau Oil with 43 years of service and retired at the age of 63 years. Donald then went on to work various part time jobs in his spare time; delivering flowers, boats, and vehicles for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. He was a member of Bridgeport Community Church, the Lions Club and VFW Post 9931 of Bridgeport. As a woodworker, Donald crafted many things out of wood, several of the pieces being canes. He enjoyed time with his family riding quads, snowmobiling, camping all summer long, visiting most of the state parks, and biking a few hundred miles every summer. His family would say that Donald was quite a character, as he was "Not too bad for an old guy;" which is something he said often. Above all, Donald especially loved the time spent with his dogs, as they had a very special place in his heart. Surviving are a daughter, a son and their spouses, Carol and Fred Muzer, Donald Jr. and Karen Sanderson both of Linden; fourteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Waneta Sanderson; a son-in-law, Jack Matzke. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and extended family. Donald is preceded in death by a son, Gary Sanderson; a daughter, Patricia Matzke; two sisters and five brothers. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 18, 2019 at Bridgeport Community Church, 3821 State Street, Bridgeport. Pastor Ronald Sinclair will officiate with military burial to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 5700 Dixie Hwy, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, and at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
