Dorothy J. Hughes

Dorothy Jessica “Dodo” Hughes

Saginaw, Michigan

Beloved sister, aunt, and friend passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, with her family at her side. At the age of 96 years.

The daughter of the late Thelma DeLaVergne and Leslie C. Hughes in Saginaw, Michigan. She graduated from Saginaw High School in 1945, the year of the Champions, and was involved in the SHS Class bass drummer in the concert band. Dorothy proudly served in the Civil Air Patrol during World War II. She was employed at Saginaw Lumber Company for 18 years, until the demise of the lumber business in Saginaw. While working at the lumber company, the City of Saginaw built the Henry Marsh Bridge, and her employer was hired to figure the replacement costs of all the buildings downtown that were to be demolished. Dorothy retired as office manager at Saginaw Processing and Supply Co. She joined the Saginaw Choral Society, formerly Civic Chorus, and was an active member until the pandemic. Dorothy was a member of Warren Avenue Presbyterian Church for almost 70 years, and now a member of Countryside Trinity Church. Dorothy volunteered at Pit and Balcony, and was a member of the American Organists Organization, and the Moose Lodge 82 where she worked on their bingo for many years. Above all, Dorothy cherished the time spent with her wonderful family and loved ones.

Surviving are her brother: David (Bonnie) of Saginaw, MI; nieces and nephews: Deborah Wolf, Rick (Tammy) Wolf, both of Brookville, OH, Tracy Ball of Centerville, OH, David L. Hughes of Brethern, MI, Christina (Garret) Vandever of Las Vegas, NV, Shannon (Nick) Waskiewicz of Gilbert, AZ, Kirk (Megan) Hughes of Hutto, TX; her “other family”: John and Judith Scheanwald Emmons of Mt. Pleasant, MI and extended Scheanwald family; friend: Jeanne Krugielki of Saginaw, MI. Also surviving are many great nieces and nephews, extended family members, and friends.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and doctors at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of Dorothy.
