Elaine Mildred Devers Schmidt Hemlock, Michigan Passed away at her home, Tuesday, January 28, 2014, following a brief illness, surrounded by her friends and family. Age 90 years. Elaine was born September 16, 1923, the daughter of the late George and Anna (Hoffman) Devers. She was a proud graduate of Saints Peter and Paul High School, Class of 1941. Elaine retired in 1989 from Hemlock Public Schools as a school secretary. She married the love of her life, her "hon", Wesley Schmidt on her birthday, September 16, 1950. Together they were blessed to celebrate 58 years of marriage before his passing in 2008. Elaine was a member of the Saginaw Area Retired School Personnel, Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the V.F.W. Post 7302 Women's Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards and was an avid reader. Her favorite hobby was being surrounded by people. No matter if you knew her as "Hon", Mom, Nana, Aunt Elaine, Elaine, Laine or Mrs. Schmidt, she and her "feisty spirit" touched your life and you knew you were loved. Surviving are her son, Brent Schmidt and his children, Neva, Cora, and Byron; her daughter, Geann; her son, Kevin (Debbie) Schmidt and their children, Randi, Sami and Dani Schmidt; her brother-in-law, Jameson Lawrence; her sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Gene Whelton. Also to cherish her memory are many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved son, Randy Schmidt in 1984; two sisters, Nelda Ott and Betty Lawrence. The funeral liturgy will celebrate Elaine's life at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1035 N. River Rd. Saginaw. Rev. Peter Gaspeny will officiate with burial in St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends may call at the W.L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Rd. from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday where a vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday. Friends may then call at the Church from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until the time of the funeral liturgy.
