Ernest J (Sam) Naessens Merrill, Michigan Ernest J. (Sam) Naessens passed away on Monday, October 29, 2018 at the age of 87. Son of the late Maurice and Evelyn (Siler) Naessens. Sam was born on December 3, 1930 in Merrill where he grew up and resided his entire life. He married Mary Dengler on May 1, 1954. She preceded him in death on October 28, 2003. Ernest was employed by Dow Corning as a pipe fitter welder with 35 years of Service. He also owned and farmed for many years. He proudly served his country in the Korean War Conflict from 1951 to 1953 and was honorably discharged with a rank of Artillery Sargent. He was a member of St. John XXIII Parish in Merrill. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #2291.Sam was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed camping, bowling and was always a call away for a good game of cards. Sam never met a stranger and was always willing to talk or help in any way he could. Surviving are his children. Fred (Cathy) Naessens, Tim (Lisa) Naessens, Nancy (Ben) Vedrode. Grandchildren Ryan (Lindsay) Naessens, Erin Naessens, Brandon and Daniel Naessens, Grant and Blake Vedrode. Great-Grandchildren Regan and Brady Naessens; his brother Rev. Fr. Phillip Naessens O.F.M. Cap, many nieces, nephews, and friends. Sam was proceeded in death by his parents; wife Mary; brother Francis, sisters Joyce Scott, and Evelyn Fordos. Sister-in-law, Irene Naessens; brothers-in-law, William Scott and Ernest Fordos. Funeral liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 2, 2018 at St. John XXIII Parish, Merrill. Sams brother Rev. Fr. Philip Naessens, O.F.M., Cap. and Rev. Fr. Dennis Kucharczyk will concelebrate. Visitation with family will be on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at W. L. Case Funeral Chapel in Merrill from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm with the Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus Fr. Neuman Council #2291; and on Friday, November 2, 2018, at St John XXIII church in Merrill from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass. Burial will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of the V.F.W.
