Went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 21, 2018 at the age of 86. He was born on August 23, 1931 in Saginaw, Michigan. He served with the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was employed by Consumers Power Company for 35 years, retiring in January of 1990. He was an active, lifelong member of Ames United Methodist Church where he proudly served as an usher for decades, as well as selflessly giving of his time and himself to working with the youth and serving on countless committees and boards. Gene was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved to spend time with his family playing cards and watching Detroit Lions football. Gene is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judith Albright, whom he married on August 20, 1966. He also leaves behind his daughter Dawn (Jason) Seamands, sons Scott (Deborah) Mertz, and Douglas (Karen) Mertz as well as six grandchildren- Rachel, Aaron, Emily, Lauren, Daniel, and Hannah; and his sister Deb Kaster, as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Ames United Methodist Church, 801 State St. Rev. Doug Mater will officiate with military burial at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. on Friday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service.
