George Marcus Bandemer, husband of Sally (Hiser) Bandemer, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and loyal friend of many passed away peacefully from complications due to COVID-19 on Friday, November 27, 2020 at the age of 69.
Growing up on the east side of Detroit along the Detroit River in the early 1950s, George was an ardent fan of the Gold Cup hydroplane races and every summer looked forward to the first roar of the racing boats. Like any young boy, he was also forever loyal to his home sports teams – the Detroit Lions, Red Wings, and Tigers.
He attended Annunciation Catholic School in Detroit along with his brothers – Marvin, Norman and Martin. George later attended East Catholic High School in Detroit, playing football and baseball. After graduating in 1970, George briefly attended Northwood University in Midland.
In 1972, George began his career at Ford Motor Company’s Utica Trim plant. He spent nearly 35 years with Ford as a proud member of UAW Local 400 before retiring in 2006 as a Skilled Tradesman.
During retirement, George enjoyed tinkering in the garage, pressing his luck at the casino occasionally, keeping his yard in pristine condition, and spending time with his family – especially with his granddaughter Paige.
Longtime residents of Metro Detroit, George also promised his wife of 46 years that they would retire “up north” to the Saginaw-area, which they did in 2018.
George is survived by his immediate family, his brothers, sisters-in-law, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Keeping everyone’s safety in mind, George would not want family and friends gathering for a funeral service. In addition, in lieu of flowers, he would also hope that you would consider contributing to one of the following organizations:
