George Willie Wernecke of Saginaw, Michigan
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. He was 89 years old. George Willie Wernecke was born on February 24, 1930, the second son born to the late William and Mary (Schultz) Wernecke. He was a proud 1948 graduate of Arthur Hill Trade School. Following graduation, George began working for Michigan Bell. When the call of our country was heard, George answered by serving in the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge, he continued to work for Michigan Bell; retiring as a technology instructor after 35 years of service. George married Evelyn J. Eisenrich on September 20, 1950; she preceded him in death on February 26, 1970. He later married Silinda E. Duensing on August 27, 1971; she survives him. George was a faithful member of Peace Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Pioneers Club and American Legion Post #439. As a young man, George enjoyed bowling. He also enjoyed traveling around the country, camping, and going antiquing. With his intellect and analytical mind, George could literally fix anything. He was also a gifted and talented woodworker, especially in creating furniture pieces.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Silinda Wernecke of Saginaw; four children: David (Susan) Wernecke of Freeland; Don Wernecke of Saginaw; Sherry (Michael) Nielsen of Bay City; Paul Wernecke of Lacy, WA; six grandchildren: Evan (Sarah) Wernecke, Katherine (Steve) Chavez, Erik (Janelle) Nielsen, Eileen Nielsen, Matthew Nielsen, Sarah Nielsen; five great-grandchildren: Helen Wernecke, Connor Nielsen, Kinsley Miles, Cruz Knaub, Alivia Nielsen; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Wernecke of Southfield. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Heinz Wernecke.
A memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road. Rev. Roger Stauffer will officiate. Honoring Georges wishes cremation has taken place. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Peace Lutheran Church or a charity of the donors choice.
