Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away on Friday, March 6, 2020 at the age of 81 years.
The son of the late Earl and Catherine (Thom) Miller was born on February 24, 1939 in Breckenridge, MI. Gerald served in the U. S. Army. He married Mary Dougherty on April 29, 1961; she survives him. Gerald retired from Michigan Bell Telephone Company after 35 years of service. He was an active member of St. John XXIII Parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served as an Eucharistic minister and befriender. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Neuman Council #2291, Eagles Club, Aerie #497 and the Merrill Lion’s Club. Gerald was the former Mayor of Merrill. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, championing Michigan State University but most especially cherished time spent with family and friends at Round Lake.
Surviving besides his wife of 58 years, Mary, are their children: Kathy (Tom) Smith, Connie (Jay) Metiva, Marlene (Tim) Miller-VanderVeen, Maurene Miller, grandchildren: Trevor, Katelyn, Jordan, Regan, Blake, Jarod, Tommy, Christine, his siblings: Pat (Larry) Urbancik, Mary Jane Aaron, Karen Sheridan, Sandee (Duane) Kruth, Ron (Colleen) Miller, Ernie (Barb) Miller, Mike (Pam) Miller, Helen Miller, Rick (Jackie) Miller, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: James (Anne) Dougherty, Pat (Pat) Dougherty, Jane Fordos, Tom (Shirley) Dougherty, Helen (Ken) Gath, Margaret (Gerald) Starke, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Besides his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his brothers Tom Miller, Bill (Cathy) Miller, brothers-in-law Bernie (Kathy) Dougherty, Jerry Aaron, Les Fordos, Mike Sheridan, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Rose (Ralph) Schultz and Dewey Dougherty.
The family would like to thank the palliative care team at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Hospital and the staff at Covenant Healthcare for the loving care they gave Gerald.
Funeral liturgy will take place at 12:00 noon Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at St. John XXIII Parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Merrill. Rev. Fr. Michael J. Steltenkamp will officiate assisted by Deacon Librado Gayton. Military Honors and Rite of Committal will follow under the auspices of the United States Army and VFW Post #7302 at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Tuesday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. where they will gather for a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Friends may also visit at the church on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral liturgy.
