Broughman, Glen Dale Bridgeport, Michigan Television news pioneer and local news broadcaster, died peacefully at age 89 on December 4th at his home in Bridgeport, Michigan. Born June 5, 1925 in Dayton, Ohio, to Esther Feitshans and John Broughman of Arcanum, Ohio. The oldest of three, Glen was predeceased by his brother, Dan. Their brother, Jimmy Connor, resides with his wife, Phyllis, in Greenville, Ohio. During his school years, Glen developed a lifelong love of reading and writing, with a particular enthusiasm for science fiction. After graduating from Arcanum High School in 1942, Glen enlisted with the US Army Signal Corps, where he served 29 months with distinction in WWII, stationed 16 months oversees in the Philippines and New Guinea. After the war, Glen took his love of storytelling to Ohio State University where he graduated in 1948 with honors in radio-journalism. He began his career in newspapers and radio. In 1953, Columbus, Georgia's CBS affiliate, WRBL, began televising operations with Glen as news editor and soon thereafter, news director. Glen testified at the Albert Patterson assassination trial and covered the consequent placement of Phenix City under martial law. He became known in the Chattahoochee Valley region as "Mr. Television," and a decade later, was so well-loved that the Commissioners of Columbus adopted a June 1962 resolution, expressing their regret Glen was leaving WRBL and the city and wishing him "every success and happiness in the future." Glen met and worked alongside nationally-renowned peers such as Walter Cronkite, Fred Friendly, and Walter Windsor. During the 1960s, as special correspondent to NASA, Glen covered the nascent American Space Program, interviewing and meeting many pioneers of American space exploration. Other notable interviews include: Martin Luther King, Jr., Richard Nixon, Senator John F. Kennedy, and several state governors including: Gordon Persons and George Wallace (Alabama), Marvin Griffin (Georgia), and William Milliken (Michigan). In 1982, Glen completed his career as evening news anchorman at WNEM-TV5 of Saginaw, and devoted the remainder of his working days to his other love, videophotography, focusing on weddings and events. Glen was predeceased by his ex-wives Catherine Dininger and Geraldine Harrison. Glen leaves behind four children, listed here with their spouses, children, and grandchildren: Barbara [Cadillac, Michigan, husband: Richard Donovan, daughter: Alexandria and her children: Caden Glen and Abel], Elizabeth [Frenchtown, New Jersey, husband: Larry McKim, children: Patrick, Quinton, and Esther], Glen Dale [Minsk, Belarus, wife: Olga Vasilyeva, children: Glen (deceased) and John Glen], and Heather [Birch Run, Michigan, husband: John Wilson, children: Bradley, John, and Cassidy]. There will be a memorial visitation at W. L. Case & Company, 5700 Dixie Highway Tuesday from 2:00 -7:00 p.m.
