Grace G. Holme-Shaw Gentle, kind, gracious: just a few words to describe the spirit of our mother Grace Geraldine (Widmoyer) Holme-Shaw. On Saturday, November 26th that beautiful spirit was lifted, along with her families' voices in song, into the waiting arms of our Heavenly Father. Born in Riverton, Minnesota in 1918, Grace was the eldest child of Frederick and Grace Widmoyer. At the age of 15 her family, then including, sister Janice (Johnson) and brother George, settled in Saginaw when her father took the position of station master on the Pere Marquette railroad line. The tiny Saginaw homestead her parents built into a warm family home upon settling in the 30's remained as mom's home for 83 years. Following her graduation from Arthur Hill High School in 1936 mom began working at Bell Telephone as a secretary. Despite the extended work hours and worries during the Second World War mom and her best girlfriends made wonderful memories together including short getaways (when gas rationing allowed), sewing bees or singing around the piano on Sunday evenings. Mom was an amazing pianist who could pick up a tune by ear and start a party beside the piano at a moment's notice. In 1950 mom married her sweetheart, our dad, William Holme-Shaw. A perfect complement to each other, both were good natured, witty and kind hearted. As parents they were devoted to their 3 girls, Janice Holme-Shaw, LeeAnne Whitman and Mary Kushner, blessing each of us with the knowledge that we were unconditionally loved and supported at all times. At this holiday time of year we can't help but remembering Moms love for Christmas and how she made the season magical for her family. She patiently baked cookies and decorated the tree with three exuberant girls, sewed outfits for church and pajamas for Christmas Eve. What wonderful memories she made for us! Mom lived to care for her girls until her last day. At 98 she was still passing out "atta girls" and sage advice. When her "Spirit was willing but the body weak" she kept herself busy knitting scarves and lightening the mood with witty Mom-isms. Grace was predeceased by her husband in 1994. In addition to her three daughters, she leaves behind to cherish her memory- a granddaughter, Hillary Huebler, two grandsons, Scott Kushner and John Eastham, a son-in-law, James D. Kushner, and many special nieces and nephews. Dear friends who were just like family: Keith Jones (her "son-at-heart"), Jeff Lange, and her best friend of 82 years, Esther Anderson. Thank you mom for brightening the world as you passed through, we will always carry your sweet spirit with us.
