The son of the late Myron and Edna (Allen) Coates, Harold was born on September 20, 1927. Harold was happily married for over 72 years to his teenage sweetheart, Mildred Clayton, marrying on June 23, 1945. Harold served nearly one year in the U S Army after WWII and was stationed in Hawaii. Upon returning home from the service he worked for Hoffman Tire Company, which Harold eventually purchased in 1956, changing the name to Coates Tire Company. Harold eventually retired and turned the business over to son, John.
Retirement allowed Harold and Mildred the opportunity to move into their cottage on Pratt Lake in Gladwin and subsequently to live in Florida full time for many years. Eventually, Harold and Mildred moved back to Saginaw to enjoy family, including great grandchildren and their many activities.
Harold, Mildred and the entire family were long time active members of Immanuel Bible (Baptist) Church in Saginaw. Harold was active in many aspects of the churchs ministry, including youth groups, Sunday school, and other leadership roles.
Harolds wife of 72 years predeceased him on September 28, 2017. Surviving are three children: John (Beverly), Beverly Centellas (Daniel) and Edward (Cynthia); eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Harolds siblings: Robert, Violet and Lucille all predeceased him.
Harold maintained and shared his strong Christian faith and values throughout his entire adult life. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He will forever be remembered for his kindness and generosity in sharing his resources, as well as opening his home to anyone in need.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Jane Costello for over 35 years of exceptional care as the family medical doctor and Covenant Hospital for their compassionate care.
