Harold Kenneth Asmus

Asmus, Harold Kenneth Kalamazoo, Michigan Formerly of Saginaw, Michigan Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017, in Kalamazoo, at the age of 89 years. He was born October 17, 1927, in Saginaw, the son of the late Gottfried and Ottillie (Schmidt) Asmus. He married Elaine Zacharias on April 30, 1949; she predeceased him August 7, 2005. Harold graduated from Arthur Hill High School with the Class of 1945. He then served with the Army Air Force during World War II, serving in Occupied Japan and was stationed on Christmas Island. He had been employed by the US Postal Service since he was a young man, retiring as Postmaster after nearly 40 years of service. He was a member of St. John Lutheran ELCA Church, Second and Federal Streets. He was also a member of American Legion Post #439, and served on its Honor Guard for many years. He enjoyed air stream traveling in his retirement, woodcarving, and living and working on his Christmas tree farm. Surviving are two sons, one daughter, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: son, Ken and Mary Jo Asmus, Kalamazoo, MI, and their children, Briana Asmus (Chris Nagle) and Kelly (Asmus) Campbell (Bryan) and their son, Elliot; son, Chris and Denise Asmus, Jersey City, NJ, and children, Glenna Asmus Nall (Alex), Aaron Asmus (Connie) and their children, Averly and Emmett, and Ashley Asmus; daughter, Pastor Karen and Bill Alsnauer, Worthington, OH and their children, Janna (Alsnauer) Bidlack (Eric) and their daughter, Cecily Jane, and Braden Alsnauer; one sister, Jane Hohensee (Julius); one nephew, Tom Hohensee; several other nieces and nephews in the Zacharias family. Funeral service will take place at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2017, St. John Lutheran ELCA Church, Second and Federal Streets, where his family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service. Rev. Kathleen Parsons Basner will officiate with entombment in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be under the auspices of American Legion Post #439.
