Cowdry, Helen Antionette (Barrus) Saginaw, Michigan
Passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015, at the age of 68 years. Helen was born May 21, 1947, in Portland, Michigan to the late Mason and Helen (Larned) Barrus. She married William R. Cowdry on September 3, 1966; he survives her. She worked with her husband as his legal secretary, until her retirement a few months prior to her death. She was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard auxiliary for 15 years serving on the Flotilla Division Levels. Helen was an avid quilter and also enjoyed teaching others to quilt. She loved fishing, camping, cooking, baking, and doing genealogy. She adored music and played the organ, accordion, hammer dulcimer, and the mandolin. Besides her husband William she is survived by her children, Dennis Cowdry and Angelia Cowdry; granddaughter, Christine Cowdry; sister-in-law, Irene Barrus; brother-in-law, Robert LaGrand; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her siblings, Berle Barrus, Maynard (Jean) Barrus, and Bethel LaGrand. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at First United Methodist Church 4790 Gratiot Rd. Rev. Kathryn Snedeker will officiate. Friends may visit with the family at church on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
