Helen VanSteenkiste

VanSteenkiste, Helen Saginaw, MI Passed away September 26, 2014, at the age of 96 years. Helen was born March 10, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Stephen and Elizabeth (Gono) Wasko. She was raised in Saginaw and graduated from Arthur Hill High School. She married Maurice J. VanSteenkiste on October 12, 1940. They enjoyed over 59 years together until Maurice's passing on June 9, 2000. During those years, they had many fun times bowling, playing cards, and gambling with their friends the Prestons, the Zimmermans, and the Darlings. Prior to her marriage, Helen worked at Woolworths. She enjoyed listening to Tiger baseball, watching her soaps, spending time outside in good weather admiring her flowers and, of course, spending time with the family. She especially enjoyed phone calls from grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very independent, determined and remained in her own home. She is survived by her son M. Don VanSteenkiste; her daughters JoAnn (Jozsef) Kovacs and Bonnie (Scott) Johnson; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Amy (Robert), Jacob and Justin Dean; Kristine (Daniel), Mackenzie and Nicholas Meldrum; Marline (Christopher), Ava and Giselle Fichter; Jeffrey (Julie), and Jack Johnson; Sara (Christopher), and Kelson Bruns; and several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her generation and was predeceased by her 5 sisters and all her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She was also predeceased by her best friend and maid of honor, Norene Preston. Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2014, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church 4735 W. Michigan. Entombment will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
