Henry Lee "Hank/Leon" Shaft Jr.

Shaft, Henry Jr. "Hank" or "Leon" Saginaw, Michigan Passed away on May 18, 2017, after a lengthy illness at the age of 85 years. Henry was born December 15, 1931, in Owosso to the late Henry and Mary (Mudge) Shaft. He retired from the Chevrolet-Saginaw Parts Plant after 33 years of service. He was a top officer, past President, and Chairman of his Union, UAW Local 552, for 20 years. After retirement he became Chairman of Local Chapter 522 Retired Workers and Chairman of Area #5 Retired Workers Council, UAW in Saginaw. He was a member of: National Council of Senior Citizens serving on the Michigan State Executive Board, Advisory Board of the Commission on Aging, Moose Lodge #82, Kosciuszko Hall, and American Legion Post 22. In 1997, he was selected as Senior of the Year in Saginaw County, Senior Citizen of the year in the State of Michigan, and Resolution of Appreciation from the Saginaw County Board of Commissioners. In 2000 he was awarded the Michigan State Council of Senior Citizens Appreciation Award. In 2005 he received the Claude Pepper Award. He will be missed by his children, Rosemary (John) Geiger, Arthur (Yvonne) Shaft, Thomas (Connie) Shaft, Julie (Bob) Strunk, Paul (Elaine) Shaft; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his fiance, Christine "Chrissy" Knezek; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Virginia Shaft; son, Henry L. Shaft III; and his siblings, Josephine Whitter and Walter Shaft. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at W.L. Case & Company 4480 Mackinaw Rd. Rev. Nancy Steele will officiate with burial in Pinegrove Cemetery, Albee Township. Friends may visit with the family on Monday at the funeral home from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
