Shaffer, Herman L. Saginaw, Michigan Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, passed away late Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Luther Manor, at the age of 95 years. He was born January 20, 1919, in Glenroy, Ohio, the son of the late James and Katie (Howell) Shaffer. He served with the US Marine Corps during World War II, and saw action in Guadalcanal and Okinawa. He married Maxine Cory on October 19, 1957 in Angola, Indiana; she predeceased him May 2, 2004. He had been employed by Ed's Rental Service for 22 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of Countryside Trinity Church. He was a member and Past Master of Saginaw Valley Lodge #154, F. & A.M., and a member and Past Patron of Bethlehem Chapter #105, O.E.S. He was also a member of the Carrollton VFW Post #1859, the Bay City Consistory, Elf Khurafeh Shrine, and the Saginaw Shrine #34 OWSJ. He enjoyed bowling, playing pool, playing cards, and spending time with his family. Surviving are his step-son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Elaine Kushon, Thomas Township; two grandchildren and their spouses, Jill and Dennis Boswell, Saginaw Township, and John and Barbara Kushon, Flushing; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, Lindsay and Zachary Boswell, Saginaw Township, Ashley and her husband Stephen Bedtelyon, and their daughter, Lorelai, Montrose, Johnny, Alex, and Jeremy Kushon, Flushing; many nieces, nephews and their families. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by one brother and three sisters, Delbert Shaffer, Opal Combs, Nita Blondin, and Mary G. Brogan. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Countryside Trinity Church, 4690 Weiss Road. Rev. Kenneth Parker will officiate with entombment in Roselawn Memorial Mausoleum. Military honors will be under the auspices of the Carrollton VFW Post #1859. His family will receive friends at the W. L. Case & Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, from 2:00 8:00 p.m. on Friday, where VFW Post #1859 will do a walk-through. The Saginaw Valley Lodge #154, F. & A.M. will conduct a Masonic memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Family and friends may then visit at the church from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until the time of service.
