(Ignazio) Gregory D’Angelo loving dad, grandpa, brother, and uncle went home to be with his Lord June 8, 2020. Greg was born April 21, 1924, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late Mariano (Mike) and Francesca Saladino D’Angelo. Greg had a deep caring love for his family especially his wife Ann of 72 years who preceded him in death November 2019 Also preceded in death his daughters, Francesca Burnell and Rosemary Cribbins and brother, Jasper (Antoinette) D’Angelo, brother-in-law, Arthur Thompson.
Greg leaves behind his daughters: Marian (David) Deyarmond, Patricia D’Angelo; son-in-law, Steve Cribbins; sister, Anna Thompson of Grand Rapids; 11 grandchildren: Scott (Carmen) Burnell, Dena Burnell, Nick Burnell, Ben (Vicki) Deyarmond, Joel (Liz) Deyarmond, Saasha (Bob) Dresen, Greg Deyarmond, Paul (Angela) D’Angelo, Demitri Cribbins, Gena (Dan) Cribbins, Gabriel Cribbins;18 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.
Greg served in the Air Force during WWII. After coming out of the Air Force, he completed his Bachelor and Master of Arts in Music. Greg’s teaching career began in Kent City, moving from there to Saginaw in 1957, to Arthur Eddy where he taught and started the Honors Band for all of Saginaw County. When the new Saginaw Township Schools were built, he took a teaching position at Douglas MacArthur High School. From Saginaw Township he established a music program at the Saginaw Catholic Diocese. In 1986, he retired from Merrill School District after 37 years of teaching. Greg’s teaching career made lifelong friends with students, staff and parents.
Greg was an excellent musician, his main instrument was trumpet. As a teenager, right through his adult life, Greg played in dance bands, big bands, wedding bands, orchestras, marching bands enjoying every minute. His music legacy lives on with his daughters, grandchildren, and students he taught, truly a gift treasured. Greg was an avid golfer for over 50 years, teaching golf at Delta College and spending many years playing his favorite course as a member of Swan Valley Golf Course.
A Funeral Service will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday June 13, 2020, at St. Dominic Parish, St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1310 Malzahn. Rev Fr. Steve Gavit will officiate. Rite of Committal and Military Honors under the auspices of the United States Air Force and VFW Post #7302 at Oakwood Mausoleum. Greg will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at noon. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Heartland Hospice.
