There was a celebration in heaven on July 31, 2024 as our father and grandfather was reunited with the love of his life and wife of 50 years, Marilyn; his first born, Michael; his grandson, Korbin “Kory” and his parents, Ralph and Catherine.
James Orlie Bell was born on July 9, 1931, the only child of the late Ralph and Catherine (Wenzel) Bell. Jim graduated at 16 from Arthur Hill, Class of 1948. In September 1948 Jim met his future wife, the late Marilyn E. Gohm at a dance at the Golden Glow Ballroom. Their first date was at the Saginaw Fair. Jim and Marilyn were married at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on September 2, 1950.
Their union was blessed with four children. The late Fr. Michael J. Bell, Kathleen M. Bence (David), Dr. Patrick J. Bell (Carol), Kristine A. Butterworth(Steven); six grandsons, Morgan Bell(fiancée Lauren Bilaski and children, Luca and Quinn); Erik Butterworth, Kyle Butterworth, the late Korbin “Kory” Butterworth, Dylan Butterworth(Chelsi) and Logan Butterworth; two great granddaughters, Amelia and Adaline Butterworth.
Jim began his life long career of being an optician at the age of 16. He worked for many different companies over his 40+ years of being a very skilled optician beginning with Phoenix Optical and ending with Great Lake Eye in the optical division.
Jim belonged to many community organizations. Jim belonged to the Hemlock chapter of the Jaycees and the Lions clubs. Jim was also a member of the Sierra club through the Diocese of Saginaw. Jim was of the Catholic faith with a long time association with St. Mary Parish in Hemlock, Michigan. Dad had a special devotion to the Virgin Mary. Dad always said the best way to get to the Son is through His mother.
Besides those previously mentioned Jim is survived by his friend and caregiver, Carol Plaga. He is also survived by a sister in law, Rosemary Gohm. Jim is survived by many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was also predeceased by members of Marilyn’s family who were like a second family to him, Carl Sr. and Katherine Gohm, Robert and Helen, Carl Jr., Fred and Ann Gohm. Also two nephews Wayne and Jim Gohm predeceased Jim.
Jim will always be remembered for his wit, witticism and sense of humor.
Private interment was held at St. Andrews Mausoleum.
