McGovern, James F., Jr. "Jim" Saginaw, Michigan Beloved father, brother and uncle passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Glacier Hills Retirement Community, age 81 years. The son of the late James F. McGovern and Grace (Cruise) McGovern was born on May 20, 1933 in Wichita, Kansas. A lifelong resident of Saginaw, he graduated from St. Mary's High School the class of 1951 where he was honored as an all-state football player. He attended Marquette University and graduated from Central Michigan University with a liberal arts degree. He served in the U.S. Army, worked as a sports writer and assistant sports editor for the Saginaw News before a 25 year career with Second National Bank of Saginaw, retiring in 1995 as assistant vice president. He was active in the community serving; as a volunteer with the Saginaw chapter of the American Red Cross, the Downtown Kiwanis Club, on the Board of the Civic Center and on the founding committee of the Saginaw Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a longtime treasurer of the Gus Maker Basketball tournaments and the Friendship Games and officiated high school football games for the Michigan High School Athletic Association. He was married to the late Nadine Williams for more than 40 years when she passed in 2009. He was a family man who enjoyed being with his beloved wife, daughter and grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter Ann Leffler, grandchildren: Alex and Natalie Leffler, siblings Mary Margaret McGovern, Elizabeth Fitzgerald, Michael (Judie) McGovern, Thomas (Kathey) McGovern, 18 nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his oldest sister, Catherine Ann Richards. Funeral liturgy will take place at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2015 at St. Stephens Catholic Church, 1310 Malzahn with burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday at the W. L. Case and Company, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Friday from 12:00 noon until the time of the funeral liturgy.
