James Howard Schmidt

James H. “Jim” Schmidt of Montrose, Michigan, formerly of Saginaw

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, April 1, 2021, at Ascension – St. Mary’s Hospital. He was 66 years old. James H. Schmidt was born on December 14, 1954, in Saginaw, Michigan, to Robert Donald and Shirley Ann (Stacey) Schmidt. He married the love of his life, Sheryl Lynne Chaltraw on November 27, 1976; she survives him. Jim was employed with General Motors, retiring with over 42 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR and playing with his grandchildren. Jim always said he was the jack of all trades and the master of none, and he will forever be remembered by those that loved him for his selflessness to family.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Sheryl Schmidt of Montrose; three daughters, Teresa (Scott) Haggerty of Montrose; Amy (Michael) Barbee of Frankenmuth; Bobbie (Patrick) Haggerty of Montrose; 12 grandchildren: Kelsey Schmidt, Faith Young, Alexis Barbee, Seth Schmidt, Austin Barbee, Asia Barbee, Conner Haggerty, Daniel Haggerty, Allison Haggerty, Amber Haggerty, Alexander Haggerty, and Wesley Haggerty; two great-grandchildren on the way; mother, Shirley Schmidt of Saginaw; two brothers and three sisters: Sue (Michael) Sobel, Donna (Rick) Zuhl, Diane (Mark) Doyle, Thomas (Amy) Schmidt, and Charles Schmidt. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, James H. Schmidt; and father, Robert D. Schmidt.
