James Leland Berden, of Shields
Age 80
Passed away on Wednesday, May 18th, 2022. He was born on July 15th, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late David & Beryl (Rich) Berden. He was a 1960 graduate of Sandusky High School, and it was while attending school that he met his high school sweetheart, Maxine Badgero. She survives him. The couple married on June 17th, 1961, and went on to spend their lives devoted to the many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren they raised. James spent the majority of his working years as a union carpenter as part of Carpenter’s Local 106 and his craftsmanship extended to a love of woodworking in his free time. He also spent that free time playing golf and riding motorcycles in his youth, but his passion was for the children he and Maxine raised. He was always there for sporting events, either as an enthusiastic onlooker or a coach helping his family. He devoted his life to children, donating time, money, and his skills to organizations and orphanages throughout the area and especially in Haiti. He is described as being easy-going, laid back, happy, and most of all as being generous with his time.
James is survived by 29 children; numerous grandchildren; and many more great children; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.
James was preceded in death by his sister Flossie Alexander.
