James R. "Jim" Qualman, a lifelong member of the Saginaw community, passed away on February 9, 2025. Born in Saginaw, Michigan on March 27, 1929, to the late Clarence and Eleanor (Coon) Qualman; Jim's roots were deeply embedded in his hometown, where he cultivated not only his career but also a vibrant life filled with love, family, and friendships.
A skilled bricklayer, Jim dedicated his career to the craft he cherished. He became a respected member of Local #9 and enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship of his fellow tradesmen. His unwavering commitment to his profession culminated in his retirement from McMath Masonry in 1993.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Jim found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. His passion for working around his yard was evident to all who knew him, as he nurtured his garden with care and attention, earning him the reputation of possessing two green thumbs. This nurturing spirit extended to his family as Rwell, where he celebrated each milestone with enthusiasm and love.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Janice, alongside his beloved children Randy (Robin) Qualman and Tom (Linda) Qualman. He cherished his role as a stepfather to Colleen (Dean) Cavelieri, Nancee (Kevin) McCarthy, and Craig Chambers. A proud grandfather, he leaves behind his grandchildren Lauren (Robby) Petter, Amanda (Clint) Edwards, James (Michelle) Qualman, Robert (Walker) Qualman, Callie Qualman, Justin Freedman, Drew Freedman, Morganne McCarthy, Travis McCarthy, Kevin McCarthy Jr., and Amber Chambers, along with 16 great-grandchildren who brought him immeasurable joy. Additionally, he is survived by his brother-in-law Richard (Patricia) Yates and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends who will forever hold his memory close.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Lorraine, whose memory remained a tender part of his past, as well as his brother Jerry Qualman and sister Judy Desk.
In the rich narrative of Jim's life, we find a legacy of hard work, love for nature, and unwavering family bonds. James continued to give back even in his passing, by donating his body to science.
