Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend passed away Friday, June 14, 2019. Age 87 years The son of the late Mary (McCormick) and John Y. Smith was born January 15, 1932 in Fremont Township, St. Charles, Michigan. He was a graduate of Hemlock High School, Class of 1950. He served with the U.S. Army, stationed in Okinawa. Jim married Alice Kanary, January 16, 1954. She survives him. He was a member of St. John XXIII Parish and Guardian Angels Church. He was active with the Scotch Society and Scottish Picnic of which Jim and Alice were crowned Queen and King in 1989. He enjoyed the outdoors, bowling, wood working, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He served as a 4H leader in Fremont Township. Surviving besides his wife, Alice, of 65 years, are their children and spouses, Diane and Doug Williams; Daniel and Debbie Smith; James and Sharon Smith; Barb and Don Fall; Cheryl and Doug Moeller; Michelle and Ed Priem; seventeen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Jean Goidosik and a brother, Thomas Smith; a brother-in-law and his wife, James and Judy Kanary; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Shirley Smith; brother Johnny Smith; his brother-in-law, Joe Goidosik, a sister-in-law, Gwen Smith and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jessie and James Kanary. The funeral liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at St. John XXIII, St. Mary Catholic Church in Hemlock. Rev. Fr. Joseph Schabel and Deacon Librado "Larry" Gayton will officiate with Military burial in St. Marys Cemetery, Hemlock under the auspices of the Hemlock-Merrill V.F.W. Post #7302. Friends may call at the W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Rd. from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Monday with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the funeral liturgy.
