Passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. She was born on July 4, 1942, in Bay City to the late Allie and Victoria (Kondziola) Wawrzyniak. Janet graduated from St. Stanislaus High School and received her BA in education from MSU. Janet married Kent Smith on October 26, 1963 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Saginaw. She taught first grade at Auburn Elementary for 31 years. Janet enjoyed gardening, knitting, home improvement projects, and spending time at the cottage on the lake. She was an active member of ADK sorority and the Garden Club of Saginaw.
Janet was predeceased by her parents, Allie and Vicki Wawrzyniak; sons Kent Smith II and Brent Smith; sister Eileen Nenninger; and grandson Nikolas Pieknik. She is survived by her husband, Kent; daughter, Stacy Smith; sister Joan (Oliver) Merriam; nephew Blake Merriam; grandchildren Rebecca, Andrew, Zachery Smith and their mother, Mary Smith-Hubbell, and Amanda Pieknik; as well as many dear cousins and friends.
Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 18, 2021, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5335 Brockway. Pastor Paul Biber will officiate with burial in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, October 17, 2021, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at W. L. Case and Company, 4480 Mackinaw Road and on Monday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the Garden Club of Saginaw, ADK Educators Scholarship Fund, Covenant VNA Hospice or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
