Jānis "John" Skabardis Saginaw, Michigan Passed away Thursday February 15, 2018 at Munson Medical Center, at the age of 79 years. Jānis was born May 24, 1938 in Barta, Latvia, the son of the late Vilhelms and Anna (Pulkis) Skabardis. He retired from General Motors. He was a member of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir, the Latvian Club of Saginaw, and the American Latvian Association. He loved his homeland of Latvia, and traveled there many times, supporting Latvian organizations and family members. Jānis served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the Bay City Yacht Club. Surviving are his children, Mara (Jeffrey) Crofoot, Markus (Heather) Skabardis; two grandchildren, Kara and Connor Crofoot; three step-grandchildren, Garrett, Blake, and Brandon; three sisters; Rita (Ronald) Stegehuis, Strauja (Eugene) Briggs and Dace (Edward) Hodgeson; his sister-in-law, Judith Skabardis; many nieces, nephews, and family members in Latvia. He was predeceased by his brother, Gaitis Skabardis. Funeral service will take place at 12:00 Noon Friday, February 23, 2018 at W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. Rev. Andrew Briggs will officiate, with cremation to follow. Friends may call at the chapel on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., and on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association.
