Jerry Dennis Bone peacefully passed away at home on Monday, April 14, 2025. Age 87 years.

Born in Athens, Georgia, he was the oldest of three children of Ralph and Ludella (Bullock) Bone. After graduating from University Training School, Jerry enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served honorably for five years. During his service, he was stationed at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula—a place that would change the course of his life. It was there he met the love of his life, Carol (Bietila), his wife of more than 64 years.

After completing his service, Jerry and Carol made Upper Michigan their permanent home. He attended Northern Michigan University, where he earned Master's degrees in both English and History. Jerry went on to teach high school English and History in the Ishpeming Public Schools District, where he became known not just for his sharp wit and quick mind, but also for his ever-present suit and signature command to his students: “Stand up and speak to Mr. Bone.”

Jerry had a big personality and an even bigger heart. He loved golfing, playing cards, and diving headfirst into a good argument. A staunch Democrat with surprisingly liberal views, he firmly believed in the importance of taking care of others—though he remained deeply suspicious that most people were trying to rip him off, a paradox that never ceased to amuse (and confuse) his family.

He had a flair for the dramatic, especially when it came to public speaking. His long, theatrical prayers were legendary—many joked he missed his true calling as a Baptist minister. He sang constantly, often trying (and failing) to stump his wife with obscure songs she’d never heard. But more than anything else, Jerry will be remembered for how fiercely he loved his family. That love was the constant thread running through every chapter of his life.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; his son Kevin (Bessie); daughter Kimberly; and his treasured grandchildren, Jacob and Karissa. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Arthur Bone, and his sister Beverly Culp. Though he has left this world, his memory—and the stories he gave us—will be cherished forever.

A Memorial Service will take place at 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at W. L. Case and Company, 4480 Mackinaw Road. Fr. Timothy Cook will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 4:30 p.m. until the time of service.
