Jimmy “Jim” Carl Matthies of Saginaw, Michigan

Passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at Shields Comfort Care. He was 89 years old. Jimmy Carl Matthies was born on January 27, 1932, in Saginaw, the son of the late Walter Carl and Esther Lucille (Braman) Matthies. He met the love of his life, Beverly Marie Cherry during high school at Arthur Hill High School and they were married on September 20, 1952; she preceded him in death on January 3, 2015. Together they were partners in life and love for 62 years. They owned and operated Award & Sports for 24 years. Jim was a certified ski instructor at Bintz’s Apple Mountain and enjoyed both skiing and golfing. He was a member of the Fordney Club, Kiwanis Club, Jaycee’s, Maple Hill Golf Club, Saginaw Country Club, Farmington Hills Country Club, and the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame. He will forever be remembered for his daily cigars, a martini or a glass of wine from his brother’s vineyard “Chateau Fontaine”, and his daily noontime coffee and donut from Tim Horton’s on Gratiot Road.

Surviving are two daughters: Wendy (Randy) Ittner of Manton, MI; Penny (Patrick) McCully of Grand Haven; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dan (Lucy) Matthies of Lake Leelanau.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie (Robert) McCulloch.

Honoring Jim’s wishes cremation has taken place. In lieu of Jim’s memory, family and friends are encouraged to celebrate his life by grabbing a coffee and donut at Tim Horton’s on Gratiot Road or donate to the American Heart Association.
