Joann M. Farrand, age 92, of Saginaw, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024. She was a beloved mother, stepmother, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother.
Joann was born Wanda Joann Oswald in Midland County on March 16, 1932, the fifth and youngest child of the late Claude and Tracy (Schultheiss) Oswald. After graduating from St. Louis High School, Joann worked for the Dow Chemical Company, where she met Richard A. Mock. Joann and Richard were married on October 4, 1952. They raised four daughters in Midland, Michigan and Brown Deer, Wisconsin. Joann was employed as Secretary to the Director of Curriculum for the Midland Public Schools (1973- 1979) and as Secretary to the Village Manager of Fox Point, Wisconsin (1980-1990). Richard preceded her in death in 1998. Following Richard's death Joann attended Delta College, from which she received an Associates Degree at the age of 71. On April 30, 2003 Joann married Donald ("Harvey") Farrand. Harvey preceded her in death in 2018. Joann was a long time member of State Street United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader and volunteered for several years in the Saginaw Public Schools READ program. Joann's other interests included gardening and playing bridge.
Joann is survived by daughters Carol Kanarek, Laura Brownell, and Cynthia (Brian "Sal") Faraglia; son-in-law Gary Malecke; grandchildren Claire (Sonya Bell) Brownell, Russell Brownell, Vanessa (Joe Hopkins) Brown, Elizabeth (Arvind Subramanian) Faraglia, and Dominic Faraglia; great grandsons Brayden Brown, Miles Bell, and Rory Bell; stepdaughters Ariane Jones LaBelle, Cynthia Collison, and Diedre Miller; and dear friend Betty VanOchten. Also surviving are many cherished nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and step grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Joann was predeceased by her daughter Beverlee Malecke, sister Marcelle (Robert) Crumbaugh, brother Romaine (Naomi) Oswald, sister Lillian (Everett) Richardson, brother Max Oswald, several nieces and nephews, and many close friends.
Joann was buried at Oakgrove Cemetery in St. Louis, Michigan A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, May 17, at 11 A.M. at W.L.
