Stewart, John Alexander Jr. Saginaw, Michigan Passed away Saturday evening, March 18, 2017, at Covenant Harrison, following a lengthy illness. Age 85 years. He was born June 21, 1931 in Saginaw, the son of the late Mary Katherine (Martin) and John Alexander Stewart II. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School with the Class of 1949 and later received a Bachelor of Arts from Albion College and a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Michigan Tehnological University. He was employed by Covenant HealthCare Center laboratory as a medical technologist, retiring after 34 years of service. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, serving as Eucharist Minister and lector. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4232 and a 4th Degree member of the Msgr. Thomas Horton Assembly. He was a patron of the Arts, serving on the Board of the Humanities Lecture Series, was co-director of Saginaw Valley Folkdancers, a member of the Saginaw County Historical Society, Saginaw Art Museum and Saginaw Enrichment Commission. He also supported the Saginaw Bay Orchestra, Saginaw Choral Society, Pit and Balcony, the Midland Symphony and Theater Guild and Bay City Players. He married Mary Ellen Datka on July 17, 1971; she survives him. He also leaves two daughters, Annette Marie Leonard and her husband, Michael Leonard; Mari Helena Lohman and her husband Robert Lohman; four grandchildren: Brenden, Katie and Brynn Lohman and William Leonard; three brothers, Albert, Dennis (wife Bonnie) and Robert Stewart; two nephews, two nieces and three grandnieces. Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 5376 State Street. Rev. Fr. Richard Bokinskie will officiate with burial in St. Andrew Cemetery. His family will receive friends at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, from 4:00 8:00 p.m. on Friday, where the Knights of Columbus Council #4232 will pray the Rosary at 5:00 p.m. Friday. Family and friends may then gather at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
