Beloved father passed away Saturday, March 20, 2021, at his home; at the age of 95 years.

The son of the late Rene and Hazel (Coupar) Shields, John was born on August 26, 1925 in Marlette, Michigan. He grew up on his family's Centennial Farm in Marlette, Michigan. John was in the U.P. deer hunting, when one night he had gone out dancing and met Ruth Inez Henriksen. He married Ruth on September 2, 1950. They shared 70 wonderful years together. Ruth preceded him in death on November 26, 2020. John was a licensed insurance agent with his wife in their insurance agency. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hemlock and attended St. John Lutheran Church, Prudenville. John served on the board and was past president of Saginaw Life Underwriters; served on the board and was the past president of the Hemlock Lions Club, the Hemlock Business Association, Hemlock Historical Society, member of the Richland Township Board, and was the county chairman in the department of beautification of Quasque Centennial Committee. He was the recipient of the Michigan Community Service Award by the Governor and Citizen of the Year. John enjoyed deer hunting, turkey hunting and boating. He enjoyed spending weekends at the family cottage at Houghton Lake.

Surviving are three children. William Shields and his wife, Mary, Hempstead, NY; Sara Marquiss and her fiancé, Mark Plymale, Hudson, Fl; Kris Shields, Southfield, MI. John is preceded in death by his sister: Carol Riley.

Private family committal service will be held with Pastor Paul Hauser officiating. A celebration of John and Ruth's life will be held summer of 2021 at a time and date to be announced later.
