John was born May 4, 1939, in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of the late John W. and Helen (Niederstadt) Schmidt. John graduated from Saginaw High School in 1957. He served in the United States Army in 1959 as a Reserve. He married Patricia (Stipe) Ordway on September 22, 1980, in Saginaw. He had enjoyed playing pool at The Alley in St. Charles with his buddies and many years of fishing with family and friends. He also enjoyed Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, and Nascar Racing. He was an active member of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Charles. His faith in God was very strong and brought him great comfort. John worked for Jasinski Builders in his early years and in December 1972 he received his license as John R. Schmidt, Builder. John was a member of The Fordney Club and Home Builders Association of Saginaw for many years.
Surviving besides his wife Pat are his sons James (Cathy) Schmidt, Merrill, David (Michelle) Ordway, Ocala, Fla. and daughter Deborah Schmidt, Texas. Grandchildren Sarah and JoMarie Allingston, Douglas Davis, Jr., Ryan (Michelle) Bingham, Kyle Bingham, Austin Wildfong, Zachary (Lyndsi Weirs) Kapusto and Bailey Ziehmer (who lived with her grandparents) and 4 greatgrandchildren Pebbles, Braxton, Zoe and Zayden. He also leaves his brothers, Walter (Mary) Schmidt, Castle Rock, Colorado, Ronald (Terri) Schmidt, St. Charles, son-in-law Fred (Janet) Bingham, Saginaw, son-in-law Randy Ziehmer (Teri Benson) Hemlock; many nephews and nieces and Sharon Schmidt, mother of James and Deborah. And most of all his beloved Chihuahua, BELLA.
John was preceded in death by his daughters, Debra K. Bingham and Connie M. Ziehmer; his-in-laws, Leonard and Gladys Stipe and Ted and Jean Cox and a granddaughter Dianah Davis and a great-grandson Malik Grice.
The Family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Aniruddha Palya and staff, the Staff at Davita Town Center Dialysis, the Doctors and Staff at Michigan Vascular Center, McLeod Dr., Saginaw, Covenant Visiting Nurses Association Hospice Care, and Dr. Ronald Gonzales and staff, St. Charles.
In accordance with John’s wishes, cremation is to take place. There will be a memorial service celebrating his life at 11am on Thursday, July 27th, 2023, at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1123 W. Walnut St., St. Charles, MI, with Rev. Jason Baldwin officiating. Visitation will take place from 2:00pm until 8:00pm on Wednesday, July 26th at W.L. Case & Company, 201 N. Miller Rd. in Saginaw, MI. In lieu of flowers memorials can be given to Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1123 W. Walnut St., St. Charles, MI. 48655.
