Joseph was a Soldier in the Co. F 9th Infantry Regiment. He married the love of his life, Ethelyn McArtor in 1952. They enjoyed 69 years of marriage before she predeceased him on November 30, 2021.

He has three siblings: Margaret Jacobs of Saginaw, Betty Cushman of Saginaw, and James Shavrnoch of Oscoda, special friends of the family, James Janni and Jan Stark, as well as several nieces and nephews. They all survive him.

Joe recently celebrated his 92nd birthday with a family gathering in his honor at his home.

He was an avid backyard mechanic, working on snowmobiles and Cub Cadet riding lawnmowers. They were routinely seen with "For Sale" signs in his front yard.
