Joseph Paul Shavrnoch, 92, passed away on March 17, 2023, at HealthSource of Saginaw.
Joseph was born to Agnes (Horvath) and Joseph Shavrnoch on January 13, 1931. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. While serving he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars and ultimately a Purple Heart with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. Joseph was a Soldier in the Co. F 9th Infantry Regiment. He married the love of his life, Ethelyn McArtor in 1952. They enjoyed 69 years of marriage before she predeceased him on November 30, 2021.
They had three children: Jackie Jo (Larry) Gainor of Harbor Beach, Steven Case Shavrnoch, who predeceased him on April 15, 1981, and Jeanne Ruth Shavrnoch of Saginaw. He has two grandchildren: Chad (Rebecca Swierczynski) Gainor and Dr. Stefanie (Dan) Behnke, both of Harbor Beach. He has three siblings: Margaret Jacobs of Saginaw, Betty Cushman of Saginaw, and James Shavrnoch of Oscoda, special friends of the family, James Janni and Jan Stark, as well as several nieces and nephews. They all survive him.
Joe recently celebrated his 92nd birthday with a family gathering in his honor at his home.
He was an avid backyard mechanic, working on snowmobiles and Cub Cadet riding lawnmowers. They were routinely seen with "For Sale" signs in his front yard.
Joe thoroughly enjoyed life, his family, neighbors and friends. He was a wonderful man with a beautiful heart and will be sorely missed.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at W. L. Case & Company, 4480 Mackinaw Road. Rev. Carol McCleary will officiate with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Military Honors will be presented under the auspices of the United States Army and American Legion Post 439. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral chapel from 10:00 am until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
