Varney, Laverne L. Saginaw, Michigan Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away Friday, April 18, 2014, at St. Mary's of Michigan. Age 90 years. He was born November 13, 1923 in Flint, Michigan, the son of the late Sidney and Louise (Pomeraning) Varney. He married Frances Birdsall on April 5, 1947, celebrating 67 years of marriage this month. He retired from Consumers Power Company after 26 years of service. He was a member of Hemlock United Methodist Church. He was a long-time member of the Washington Society and a member of the L.O.O.M. Lodge #82. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son and grandsons. He also enjoyed taking care of his yard and taking his grandchildren for rides on the lawnmower. Laverne and Fran loved dancing. Surviving are his wife, Frances; one daughter, one son and their spouses, Sandra and Paul Reis, and Gary and Cathy Varney; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Bauer, Melanie Varney, Jamie Varney, Sara and her husband Matt Mendoza, and Krystal Tilot; great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, LCpl Amberleigh Morris, USMC, Caitlan Wascher and her son Gabriel, Austin Varney, Jonathan Varney, Lux Mendoza, Kiersten Tilot and Cassidy Tilot; two sisters, Dorothy Hanson and Donna Peters; one brother and his wife, Harry and Debbie Varney; several nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Amanda Reis, and by three brothers and two sisters, Paul, Kenny and Harold Varney, Mildred Rembish, and Evelyn Marko. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at the W. L. Case & Company Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Road, where his family will receive friends from 2:00 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and then from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service. Rev. Jerry Paul Densmore will officiate with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Hemlock United Methodist Church. www.casefuneralhome.com
