Leonard George Callard, age 84 of Bridgeport, passed away at Covenant Healthcare on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. He was born May 3, 1939, in Swartz Creek, MI, to the late Ward and Alice (Blair) Callard. He graduated from Swartz Creek High School prior to continuing his education, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Central Michigan University. He married Barbara Perkins on August 4, 1962, in Saginaw, MI after the two met while taking a college play production class at Central Michigan University. Leonard retired in 1999 from Bridgeport High School where he taught history for over 37 years and where he also coached track & field and golf. In his free time, Leonard volunteered countless hours for the Pit & Balcony Community Theatre and the Saginaw Children’s Museum. Family was most important of all. Leonard attended every grandchild’s dance recital and sporting event he could, always making sure to take the time to let his family know he cared about them. He is remembered as being an outgoing man who knew someone everywhere he went and who made connections easily. Most importantly, he never forgot a student.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara, and their three children, Jeff (Penny) Callard, Beth (Brian) Briggs, and Michele (John) Krayer; seven grandchildren, Trevor and Jack Krayer, Grayson, Blair, and Nolan Briggs, Abbey (Austin) McNeill, and Tori Callard; two brothers, Ernie (Kathy) and Marshall (Diane) Callard; and brother-in-law Stu (Franca) Perkins.
Leonard was preceded in death by sisters June (Don) Buck and Laura (Jerry) Newcom.
In accordance with Leonard’s wishes, cremation is to take place. Visitation for Leonard will take place from 2:00pm-7:00pm on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, and from 11:00am-2:00pm on Wednesday, May 31 at W.L. Case & Company Funeral Home, 5700 Dixie Highway, Saginaw, MI. A memorial service will take place at 2:00pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Those wanting to make a show of their sympathy may wish to consider a memorial contribution to Pit & Balcony Community Theatre, the Saginaw Children’s Museum, or Special Olympics Area 27.
