Ludmila Spacs

Ludmila Spacs Saginaw, Michigan The dearly cherished wife of the late Valdis Spacs, and a beloved mother and grandmother passed away peacefully Sunday, April 6, 2014, at the age of 93 years. She was born June 18, 1920, in St. Petersburg, Russia. She grew up and lived in Latvia for 20 years. Forced to flee from her homeland, she was eventually able to immigrate to the USA with her husband and daughter in 1951. A longtime resident of Saginaw, she worked as a dental assistant and technician and office manager for Drs. Gardey, Kettelhohn and Ruggani of Saginaw. She also served as President of the Dental Assistants Association. She greatly enjoyed her 30 years of employment and learning to know the hundreds of patients she served. Mr. and Mrs. Spacs were an integral and active part of the Latvian Community in Saginaw. They were founding members of the Latvian Lutheran Church, and both sang in the Latvian Club Chorus. Ludmila also served for many years as Chair of the Ladies Committee of the Latvian Club, organizing social and cultural events and hosting visiting artists and lecturers. Ludmila also loved to spend summers with family and friends at their cottage on Burt Lake. Ludmila was known by all as quite a character. She was known to be loyal, forthright, stylish, witty, feisty, and always engaging. Ever a capable and diligent worker, she was grateful and proud of what she could make of her opportunities and freedoms as a US citizen. She enjoyed a long, healthy, and happy life. She is survived by her daughter, Guna Spacs Svendsen and her husband, David, of Newton, MA; and by her granddaughter, Dr. Sasha Spacs Svendsen. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the Latvian Lutheran Church, 128 N. Elm Street, Saginaw.
