Lynda Mefford, age 81, of Saginaw, passed away on October 20, 2024, after bravely fighting illness. Surrounded by her loved ones, she went to be with Jesus.
Lynda was the light of every room she entered; her sunny disposition truly reflected the essence of who she was. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Barbara and Robert Scribner, Lynda spent her childhood as a ballet dancer and enjoyed acting with the Rainbow Girls Masons Club. She spent her teenage years in Toledo, Ohio, where she met her soulmate, Gordon Mefford. Their love story began when he saved her dog after it was hit by a car. They cherished their time together at Cedar Point and enjoyed swimming at the beach, much to her father’s amusement as he questioned her sunburns after “work.”
In 1963, Lynda and Gordon were married at Grace Lutheran Church. Together, they welcomed three wonderful sons: Gordy Jr., Dave, and Mike. They created a loving home on Area Drive, giving their boys a childhood filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Lynda would often wake the boys in the middle of the night to make snow angels on freshly fallen snow, and summers were spent as a family at their cottage on Houghton Lake. She was also notorious for starting the occasional mashed potato food fight.
As a devoted stay-at-home mom, Lynda later became a nurse for 20 plus years for multiple doctors offices. It was at Dr. Cavendish's office that she found joy in creating a funny book titled 101 Household Uses for Your Pet Hamster during slow days. Lynda also contributed her time to many charities, always looking to help those in need.
Lynda had a passion for painting canvases and rocks for gardens, a talent she inherited from her mother. She also enjoyed golfing in her ladies league, affectionately called the S.H.I.T. League (Sure Happy It's Thursday). It was her avid reading that made her impossible to beat in a game of Scrabble. Lynda and Gordon traveled extensively, with favorite trips to Hawaii, Alaska, and Ireland. They spent many winters in Naples, Florida, surrounded by dear friends and a wonderful church family. For the past 20 years, they have attended Bible study weekly, demonstrating her unwavering faith in God.
Lynda had an enduring love for all animals, which was evident in her passion for painting them and her eagerness to learn about their unique traits and behaviors. Her very special dog, Happy, was her beloved fur baby and constant companion. Happy brought immeasurable joy and comfort to Lynda’s life, and the bond they shared was truly special.
As a grandmother and great-grandmother, Lynda delighted in taking her grandchildren for dessert before dinner, cheering them on at sporting events, and creating special memories with them at places like Panda House, the movies, and fairy hunts at Roethke Park.
Lynda is survived by her husband, Gordon Mefford; sons, Gordy Mefford Jr. (Katherine Arkell), Dave Mefford (Rebecca Hart), and Mike Mefford (Chris Dennis); brother Bob Scribner (Tony); grandchildren Sarah Schomaker (Jared), Stephanie Mefford, Haley Mefford, Nick Mefford, Jordan Dailey; and great-grandchildren Parker, Ayden, Lillyan, Adilynn, Hazyl, and Jaxson.
A celebration of life will be hosted by family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
