Margaret Irene Castanon of Thomas Township
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Sunday, December 27, 2020. She was 73 years old. Margaret Irene Castillo was born on April 29, 1947, in Saginaw, Michigan, to the late Encarnacion and Rose (Unzueta) Castillo. She was proud 1965 graduate of St. Joseph High School. She married the love of her life, Joseph Ortega Castanon on November 2, 1968, at Sacred Heart Church in Saginaw; he survives her. She then embarked on a career that spanned 20 years with Meijer; retiring in 1999 as a service manager. Margaret was an avid reader, enjoyed shopping, and traveling with her husband Joe and family, especially to Las Vegas. Margaret was a superb cook and a marvelous baker, well known throughout her family for her deserts, pies, and the infamous chocolate cake. What made Margaret so profound and priceless in the kitchen was that she knew exactly how many cups of love, pinches of care, and dashes of kindness were needed to make a meal complete. Above all, she loved and cherished her family, especially Holiday gatherings. She will forever be remembered for her selflessness to family and friends, her innate ability to connect with all people, and for her beautiful and indomitable spirit.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Joseph Ortega Castanon of Thomas Township; two sons: Steven John (Trina) Castanon of Chesaning; Matthew Joseph (Tammie) Castanon of Saginaw Township; eight grandchildren: Justin Castanon, Alaedra Castanon, Taylor Castanon, Hope Castanon, Molly Castanon, Randi O’Connor, Mariah Going, and Jeremiah Thorpe; two great-grandchildren: Conner Castanon and Kaiden O’Connor; mother, Rose Castillo of Saginaw Township; one sister and one brother: Theresa (Robert) Guzman of Saginaw Township; Michael Castillo of Saginaw Township;( brother-in-law and sister in law), special nieces, Rachel Hochen of Denver, CO; Margaret Salazar of Saginaw Township; Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by a son, Eric Allen Castanon; father, Encarnacion Castillo; two brothers, John and Rick Castillo.
A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2020, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1035 N. River Road. Rev. Fr. Peter J. Gaspeny will officiate. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the church on 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the American Cancer Society and Holy Spirit Church.
