Mary A. Gilbert

Mary A. Gilbert, age 92, passed away July 9, 2021 at Edgewood Assisted Living Center in Saginaw, Michigan. She was born February 8, 1929 to Mabry Oliver Weems and Mariam Arden Johnson in Jackson, Mississippi. She was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Following high school she moved with her family to New Orleans, Louisiana. There she met her husband Jack W. Gilbert. They were married on August 7, 1951 in Biloxi, Mississippi. Following their wedding they moved to Saginaw, Michigan. They started a laundry and dry-cleaning business and raised their three sons. Beyond working in the family business Mary had a number of interests. She excelled in sewing, painting, gardening, reading, journaling and swimming. She acquired a real estate and a broker's license. She was proud of obtaining the highest grade in the class for the broker's examination. She was overwhelmingly proud of her three sons and always available to provide them guidance. During retirement she and Jack spent the winters on Pine Island in Florida. They also travelled extensively throughout the western states including Alaska with their travel trailer.

Mary is survived by her three sons; Donald A. Gilbert (Patricia), Richard W. Gilbert (Mary) and James D. Gilbert. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Whitney V. Killian (Matt), Madeline E. Gilbert and Skyler V. Gilbert, and her brother George M. Weems (Nancy). She was Aunt Mary to 21 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Patricia Ann Weems as well as her husband Jack W. Gilbert in 2014.

The family remains extremely grateful for the care provided by the dedicated employees of Edgewood Assisted Living and Cardinal Hospice.

A memorial service will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at W. L. Case & Company, 4480 Mackinaw Road. Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the memorial service.
